Samuel's Journey Toward Justice, Healing, and a Brighter Future
If this is our first time to meet, "Hello". I am Rachelle, the mother of an incredible young man named Samuel. Over the past decade, our family has faced a battle I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Samuel’s journey through chronic kidney disease, multiple hospital systems, and devastating medical setbacks has tested our faith, resilience, and strength. Now, as we stand at a crossroads, I’m sharing our story in the hope that it inspires others to help us advocate for Samuel’s care and give him the future he deserves.
A Decade of Challenges
Samuel was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome in 2014, and by 2015, it had progressed to FSGS (focal segmental glomerulosclerosis), a condition that would eventually require a kidney transplant. Despite years of dialysis, medical interventions, and our constant advocacy, systemic barriers made his journey incredibly difficult. We’ve had to navigate hospital policies, vaccine mandates, and inconsistent care, all while watching Samuel’s health—and trust in the medical system—deteriorate.
In 2023, Samuel underwent a long-awaited kidney transplant. It should have been the turning point, but instead, it turned into a nightmare. Within days, the kidney clotted in both the artery and vein—a rare occurrence doctors couldn’t explain. Despite multiple emergency surgeries, the kidney was lost. Samuel endured unimaginable physical and emotional trauma, and our family’s trust in the healthcare system was shattered furthermore.
Why We Need Your Help
Samuel has been through so much. At just 14 years old, he was forced to make decisions about his health that even adults would struggle with. He’s now hesitant to pursue further medical procedures, and who can blame him? But he deserves another chance—a chance to find a team of doctors who will truly listen, to have care that prioritizes his safety and well-being, and to regain the hope that has been stolen from him.
As his mother, I’ve done everything I can to advocate for him. I’ve questioned protocols, sought out specialists, and even paid for therapies to help him cope with the trauma. But we can’t do this alone. The costs of care, travel to specialists, and legal fees for advocating his rights are overwhelming.
